Although Picasso never visited Cyprus, his relationship with Cypriot antiquities is particularly revealing. The artist became acquainted with these works through European museum collections, such as the Louvre, and through specialist publications of his time.

The exhibition is guided by a reflection on how Pablo Picasso engaged with the formal and symbolic aspects of ancient Cypriot art. This was not a simple case of formal appropriation, but rather a profound fascination with the hybridisation of styles and the creativity of this ancient art, characterised by the fusion of human and animal figures, as well as by a singular playful and expressive quality. The exhibition will feature a selection of works from museums and collections across Europe, including a significant group from the holdings of the Museu Picasso de Barcelona and the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus.
