The Piano Tour (candidate for the Music Rights Award 2025 of the International Music Council) is a contemporary cultural institution that redefines the way classical music engages with public space and audiences. An initiative of the Avantgarde Cultural Foundation, it has, since its inception, developed a distinctive artistic and social footprint across Cyprus, transforming the entire island into an open, living musical stage.

At its core, The Piano Tour is built upon a simple yet transformative idea: the piano is liberated from the formal setting of the concert hall and placed in unexpected, often emblematic or historically significant environments. Archaeological sites, UNESCO World Heritage monuments, natural landscapes, urban neighborhoods, and culturally meaningful locations become settings for artistic encounter. In this way, music operates not merely as performance, but as dialogue with place, memory, and community.

The evolution of the institution is also reflected in the expansion of its artistic collaborations. A notable example is the appearance of the youth mixed choir ARS NOVA at Larnaca International Airport, under the direction of Iakos Demetriou, with Plotinos Micromatis accompanying on the piano. The choice of the airport— a quintessential space of transition, convergence, and multicultural exchange— reinforces the symbolic dimension of The Piano Tour: music transcends borders and integrates into the everyday rhythm of society.

Ars Nova, committed to promoting and elevating choral music culture in Cyprus while providing a platform for emerging artists, embodies the same values of openness and inclusivity that define The Piano Tour. Although its repertoire is primarily rooted in Western European musical tradition, it also embraces jazz and gospel influences, as well as music from around the world. This diversity reflects its broader philosophy: music as a universal language that unites people beyond difference and individuality. Its participation within the framework of The Piano Tour highlights the institution’s ongoing evolution and its inclusive approach to polyphonic expressions.

As an institution, The Piano Tour has developed a coherent identity that combines artistic excellence, spatial innovation, and social awareness. Locations are selected with strategic intention, highlighting Cyprus’ cultural and natural heritage while fostering a sense of participation and pride within the communities that host each event.

Beyond quantitative indicators  such as the number of recitals, participating artists, and digital views, as each recital is broadcast live on social media  the project’s most significant impact is qualitative. Music functions as a catalyst for emotional connection, strengthening trust between institutions and local communities. The experience of a recital in a non-traditional venuewhether a heritage monument or a contemporary hub such as an airportcreates memories and shared moments that extend beyond measurable metrics.

The Piano Tour has now established itself as a consistent point of reference within the cultural landscape of Cyprus. With each new destination, it reaffirms the conviction that music is not confined by walls or borders; it can flourish wherever there are people willing to share in the experience. In this journey, the phrase “Sky is the limit” acquires both literal and symbolic resonance.
